What's hiding in your food?

Know before you bite.

Tomato, potato, pepper and eggplant hide on labels under other names. NightShade Health reads the label and shows you what's in it.

The same plants, under other names

  • Paprika extract

A colour made from peppers. Often listed only as E160c.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 3 · Trace

  • Modified starch

Can be potato, corn or wheat. The label rarely says which.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 2 · Unclear

  • Natural flavours

A group name. It can cover tomato or pepper without naming them.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 2 · Unclear

  • Potato flakes

Dried potato. Listed first on a label, it is the main ingredient.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 5 · High

How it works

  1. Scan the barcode, the ingredients or the front of the pack.

  2. See what's in it, from 0 (none found) to 5 (a main ingredient).

  3. Eating out abroad? Show the kitchen a card in their language.

The NSX calculator

How a level is worked out

Every word on a label gets two grades. How sure are we that it comes from a nightshade, and how much of it is there? Together they give its NSX level. A product takes the highest level of its ingredients.

The NSX level for each pair of grades. When the label doesn't say what a word is made from, the amount can't change its level.
How sure How much Trace Minor Ingredient Major
Not a nightshade 0 0 0 0
Unlikely 1 1 1 1
Possible 2 2 2 2
Probable 3 3 4 4
Confirmed 3 4 4 5

The words from above

  • Paprika extract Confirmed pepper, in a trace amount

    NSX · Exposure NSX 3 · Trace

  • Modified starch Possible. The label doesn't say which plant.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 2 · Unclear

  • Natural flavours Possible. A group name that can cover tomato or pepper.

    NSX · Exposure NSX 2 · Unclear

  • Potato flakes Confirmed potato, listed first, so a major amount

    NSX · Exposure NSX 5 · High

In the app, every result shows how it was scored

Tap "How was this scored?" under a result to open the NSX calculator with that product's ingredients. Change an amount or swap an ingredient and watch the level move. Your result stays as it was.

For restaurants and cafés

Guests who avoid nightshades ask before they order. We're working with a few kitchens to make that conversation easier.

On a pilot menu, each dish shows its NSX level. Only a guest's own app knows what that means for them.

Questions

Is this medical advice?

No. NightShade Health gives information about ingredients. NSX describes exposure, not diagnosis. Always check the label.
